Target Information
Eukaryotes produce three distinct classes of RNA polymerase: Pol I, II, and III.
- Pol I transcribes rRNA genes for 28S, 18S, and 5.8S ribosomal RNA precursors.
- Pol II transcribes protein-encoding genes into mRNA and snRNA genes into snRNAs.
- Pol III transcribes 5S rRNA and all tRNA genes.
Each RNA polymerase consists of 9–15 polypeptides, with RPB6 and RPB8 subunits shared among all three.
