This gene encodes glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), a cytosolic enzyme that produces NADPH, essential for defense against oxidative stress and reductive biosynthesis.
G6PD is encoded by a housekeeping X-linked gene and exhibits significant genetic diversity. Variants caused by missense mutations show varying enzyme activity and clinical symptoms, including neonatal jaundice, acute hemolysis, or chronic non-spherocytic hemolytic anemia.
Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
