DEAD box 단백질은 Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp (DEAD) 보존 모티프를 가지며, RNA helicase로 작용하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 이들은 RNA 2차 구조 변형과 관련된 다양한 세포 과정(번역 개시, 핵 및 미토콘드리아 스플라이싱, 리보솜 및 스플라이소솜 조립 등)에 관여합니다. 일부 DEAD box 단백질은 발생, 정자 형성, 세포 성장 및 분열 과정에 관여하는 것으로 추정됩니다.
