Target Information

CRP (C-reactive protein) is a major cyclic, pentameric acute-phase protein composed of five identical, noncovalently bound, nonglycosylated subunits. Each subunit consists of 206 amino acids with a molecular weight of 24 kDa. It is produced by the liver, and plasma levels rise dramatically during inflammatory processes.

CRP initiates the classical complement cascade, binds to nuclear components (chromatin, histones, etc.), and plays an important role in innate immunity and nonspecific host resistance. Levels of CRP can increase 100–1000 fold in response to injury, infection, or inflammation. It acts as an opsonin, activates monocytes/macrophages, and serves as a scavenger during cell necrosis.

Elevated basal levels of CRP are associated with increased risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
