Target Information
OPA1 is a dynamin-related GTPase critical for maintaining mitochondrial morphology and mtDNA integrity. Mutations in OPA1 are commonly associated with heterozygous optic atrophy, a dominant trait leading to visual impairment or blindness, typically beginning in childhood and worsening with age. The condition is linked to degeneration of optic nerve fibers. OPA1 dysfunction is also implicated in certain neurological disorders such as schizophrenia, due to its role in mitochondrial network regulation, apoptosis, and cellular metabolism.
