Target Information
AMPK beta 1 is a regulatory subunit of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). AMPK is a heterotrimer consisting of an alpha catalytic subunit and non-catalytic beta and gamma subunits. It functions as an energy-sensing enzyme that monitors cellular energy status. Upon metabolic stress, AMPK is activated and phosphorylates key enzymes such as acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and beta-hydroxy beta-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGCR), which regulate fatty acid and cholesterol biosynthesis. The beta 1 subunit may positively regulate AMPK activity and affect enzyme localization through myristoylation and phosphorylation. It may also serve as an adaptor molecule mediating the association of the AMPK complex.
