Target Information
Ubiquitin-like molecules, such as SUMO1, are structurally related to ubiquitin and can be ligated to target proteins similarly. Unlike ubiquitin, SUMO1 modification does not lead to degradation of modified proteins. SUMO1 is involved in targeting RANGAP1 to the nuclear pore complex and stabilizing I-kappa-B-alpha against proteasomal degradation.
UBLs are synthesized as precursors and require processing by UBL-specific proteases, such as SENP6, before conjugation. SENP6 also exhibits isopeptidase activity for deconjugation of SUMO-conjugated substrates.
