Target Information
Cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL)-mediated cytotoxicity is a key effector mechanism in immunosurveillance against virus-infected or transformed cells. Two mechanisms account for this activity: the perforin-based process and the FAS-based mechanism involving FAS (APO-1) and its ligand (FAS-L).
Human FAS (APO-1) is a 48 kDa cell surface glycoprotein belonging to the receptor family that includes CD40, nerve growth factor receptors, and tumor necrosis factor receptors. FAS antigen is broadly expressed on lymphoid cell lines and is highly expressed in T cells following TCR crosslinking.
A previously undescribed protein, TDAG51, restores activation-induced apoptosis in cells lacking Fas expression in response to activation.
