CXCL12은 stromal cell-derived alpha chemokine으로, intercrine family에 속합니다. CXCL12와 그 수용체 CXCR4는 림프구를 활성화시키며, 유방암 등 일부 암의 전이에 관여하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다. 또한, 이 유전자의 돌연변이는 HIV-1 감염 저항성과 관련이 있습니다. 다양한 전사 변이체가 보고되어 있으며, 서로 다른 아이소폼을 암호화합니다.
