Target Information
Cystatin C is a member of the type 2 cystatin superfamily and a potent inhibitor of cysteine proteinases, both endogenous (lysosomal cathepsins) and pathogenic. It is a 13 kDa secreted protein found in high concentrations in biological fluids and is expressed by all human nucleated cells. Variations in Cystatin C levels are associated with cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, amyloid angiopathy, and myocardial infarction. Due to its low molecular weight, Cystatin C is also used as a marker for renal failure.
