Target Information

The ion channels activated by glutamate are divided into two classes:

  • NMDA receptors (NMDAR), sensitive to N-methyl-D-aspartate.
  • AMPA receptors (AMPAR), activated by alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxalone propionic acid.

AMPARs consist of four distinct Glutamate Receptor Subunits (GluR1–4) and play key roles in excitatory neurotransmission in the brain. The GluR2 subunit is involved in synaptic plasticity, such as long-term depression (LTD).
