Target Information
The inhibin alpha subunit combines with either the beta A or beta B subunit to form an inhibitor of pituitary FSH secretion. Inhibin regulates gonadal stromal cell proliferation negatively and exhibits tumor-suppressor activity. Serum levels of inhibin reflect granulosa-cell tumor size and can serve as a marker for primary and recurrent disease. In prostate cancer, inhibin alpha-subunit gene expression is suppressed and undetectable in poorly differentiated tumor cells. Expression varies across gonadal and extragonadal tissues, suggesting that inhibin functions as both a growth/differentiation factor and a hormone.
