Target Information
Mammalian apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease (APE/ref-1) is a multifunctional, bipartite enzyme crucial for DNA repair and redox regulation of transcription factors such as Fos, Jun, NF-κB, Myb, HIF-1α, CREB, and Pax.
APE is involved in repairing abasic sites caused by spontaneous loss, oxidative damage, chemotherapy, ionizing radiation, UV irradiation, and DNA glycosylase activity.
It shows differential expression during development and across tissues, with diverse subcellular localization supporting interaction with various cellular proteins beyond nuclear DNA repair.
Regulation occurs via phosphorylation by casein kinase II, and expression increases upon reoxygenation of hypoxic cells or in malignant tissues, while decreased expression correlates with apoptosis induction.
