Target Information
Mammalian apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease (APE/ref-1) is a multifunctional enzyme involved in DNA repair and redox regulation of various proteins. APE repairs abasic sites in DNA and regulates transcription factors such as Fos, Jun, NF-kB, Myb, HIF-1α, CREB, Pax, and p53. It plays roles in oxidative signaling, cell cycle control, and apoptosis.
APE expression varies by tissue and developmental stage, and its localization suggests interactions with multiple cellular proteins. Regulation by phosphorylation is mediated by casein kinase II. Elevated APE levels are observed upon reoxygenation of hypoxic cells and in certain malignant tissues, while decreased expression is linked to apoptosis induction.
