Target Information
Kcnab2 encodes a beta subunit of voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels, which belong to the 6-transmembrane (6-TM) family of potassium channels. These channels regulate a wide range of physiological functions including neurotransmitter release, heart rate, insulin secretion, neuronal excitability, epithelial electrolyte transport, smooth muscle contraction, and cell volume.
Kv channels are composed of alpha-subunits forming tetramers and auxiliary beta-subunits such as Kcnab2 that modulate channel properties. Alternative splicing of the Kcnab2 gene produces multiple isoforms. Diseases associated with KCNAB2 include Chromosome 1p36 Deletion Syndrome.
