Target Information
Adipose tissue acts as a tightly regulated energy reserve in animals. Adipocytes secrete various physiologically important proteins, including lipoprotein lipase (LPL), leptin, Acrp30, perilipin, and resistin.
Resistin (also known as Adipocyte Secreted Factor, ADSF, or FIZZ3) is a cytokine secreted specifically by adipocytes. It has been implicated in type 2 diabetes, as elevated serum resistin levels in obese, diabetic mice have been associated with insulin antagonism.
Resistin gene expression requires C/EBP alpha and is modulated by coactivators CBP and p300, which acetylate histones at the resistin promoter. PPAR gamma and RXR ligands are known to downregulate resistin expression in adipocytes.
