Neurofilaments typically contain three intermediate filament proteins: NEFL, NEFM, and NEFH, which are essential for maintaining neuronal caliber.
NEFH plays a key role in mature axons, distinct from the smaller NF proteins, and may cooperate with neuronal intermediate filament proteins PRPH and INA to form filamentous networks.
