Target Information

Survivin (IAP4) is the smallest member of the Inhibitors of Apoptosis Protein (IAP) gene family.
IAPs are involved in cell signaling, division, metabolism, and are differentially expressed in most human cancers but not in normal tissues. Survivin contains a single BIR domain and lacks a C-terminus RING finger domain.
Gene expression is high during fetal development and in tumors but low in adult tissues. Survivin associates with microtubules during mitosis, regulating apoptosis and caspase-3 activity.
It is also expressed in brain tissues following traumatic injury, co-expressed with NeuN and PCNA, suggesting roles in neural cell proliferation.
At least four transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified, with three fully characterized. Survivin overexpression may bypass apoptotic checkpoints and promote tumor cell progression.
