Target Information
IL-10 encodes a cytokine primarily produced by monocytes, with some production by lymphocytes. It plays a key role in immunoregulation and inflammation by down-regulating Th1 cytokines, MHC class II antigens, and costimulatory molecules on macrophages. IL-10 enhances B cell survival, proliferation, and antibody production, and can block NF-kappa B activity. It is involved in the JAK-STAT signaling pathway. Mouse knockout studies indicate IL-10 is essential for intestinal immune regulation. Mutations in IL10 are linked to increased susceptibility to HIV-1 infection and rheumatoid arthritis. Associated diseases include Graft-Versus-Host Disease and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1.
