Target Information
TOP2B (DNA Topoisomerase II Beta) is a protein-coding gene encoding a DNA topoisomerase enzyme that controls and alters the topologic states of DNA during transcription.
This nuclear enzyme is involved in chromosome condensation, chromatid separation, and the relief of torsional stress during DNA transcription and replication.
It catalyzes transient breaking and rejoining of duplex DNA strands, allowing them to pass through one another and alter DNA topology.
Two forms exist due to gene duplication: the beta form (chromosome 3) and the alpha form (chromosome 17).
TOP2B is a target for several anticancer agents; mutations can lead to drug resistance. Reduced activity may be associated with ataxia-telangiectasia.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
