Target Information
TOP2B (DNA Topoisomerase II Beta) is a protein-coding gene that encodes a DNA topoisomerase enzyme responsible for controlling and altering DNA topology during transcription. This nuclear enzyme plays key roles in chromosome condensation, chromatid separation, and relieving torsional stress during DNA transcription and replication. It catalyzes transient breaking and rejoining of duplex DNA strands to allow strand passage and topology alteration.
Two forms of this enzyme exist due to gene duplication: the beta form (chromosome 3) and the alpha form (chromosome 17). TOP2B functions as a target for anticancer agents, and mutations can lead to drug resistance. Reduced enzyme activity may contribute to ataxia-telangiectasia. Alternative splicing generates multiple transcript variants.
