Target Information
Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin receptor family. It plays a critical role in signal transduction, T cell differentiation, and activation.
CD8 is primarily expressed on T cells as a disulfide-linked heterodimer (CD8α/CD8β) and functions as a co-receptor with the T cell receptor (TCR) for MHC class I molecules.
Additionally, CD8α can form homodimers found on subsets of T cells, NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells.
Upon MHC-I/peptide complex binding, CD8 recruits Lck kinase, leading to cytokine production, motility, and activation of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs).
Activated CTLs are essential for pathogen and tumor cell clearance. Differentiation of naïve CD8+ T cells into CTLs is promoted by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
