Target Information

Alpha 2-Macroglobulin (A2M) is an approximately 720-kDa homotetrameric glycoprotein composed of four identical ~180 kDa subunits. It shares structural features with other alpha-macroglobulins such as complement components C3, C4, and pregnancy zone protein (PZP), exhibiting broad ligand-binding capacity. This enables A2M to act as a humoral defense barrier against foreign peptides in plasma. A2M captures various proteinases, functioning as a panprotease inhibitor. In Alzheimer’s disease patients, A2M has been localized to diffuse amyloid plaques, suggesting its role in AD pathogenesis.
