Target Information

Mitochondrial creatine kinase (MtCK) facilitates the transfer of high-energy phosphate from mitochondria to cytosolic creatine. It belongs to the creatine kinase isoenzyme family and exists as two isoenzymes: sarcomeric MtCK and ubiquitous MtCK, encoded by separate genes. MtCK forms both dimers and octamers, unlike cytosolic isoenzymes that form only dimers. Sarcomeric MtCK shares 80% homology with ubiquitous MtCK coding exons. This gene includes motifs common to nuclear genes encoding mitochondrial proteins, suggesting a role in coordinated mitochondrial gene activation. Three transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
