Target Information

F4/80 antigen is a 160 kDa cell surface glycoprotein belonging to the EGF-TM7 family, sharing 68% amino acid identity with human EMR1. Expression varies during macrophage maturation and activation. It is present on mature tissue macrophages such as Kupffer cells, Langerhans cells, microglia, and macrophages in the gut, peritoneal cavity, lung, thymus, bone marrow stroma, and spleen red pulp. F4/80 is also expressed on some dendritic cells but absent from macrophages in T cell areas of spleen and lymph nodes. Though its ligands and functions are not fully defined, studies suggest a role in generating efferent CD8⁺ regulatory T cells.
