Target Information
Guanine nucleotide-binding proteins (G proteins) form a large family of signal-transducing molecules. They exist as heterotrimers composed of alpha, beta, and gamma subunits. The alpha subunit binds guanine nucleotides, hydrolyzes GTP, and interacts with specific receptors and effector molecules.
The G protein family includes:
- Gs and Gi, which regulate adenylate cyclase activity (stimulatory and inhibitory, respectively)
- Go, abundant in brain tissue
- Transducin-1 and Transducin-2, involved in phototransduction in retinal rods and cones
