Target Information
BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor) belongs to the neurotrophin family. It is synthesized as pre-proBDNF, then cleaved to proBDNF, and further processed to the mature 14 kDa protein. Both pro-BDNF and mature BDNF are biologically active, secreted in synaptic vesicles.
BDNF is widely expressed in the central nervous system and acts via TrkB and p75-NTR receptors, promoting neuronal survival, differentiation, and synaptic regulation. It plays a vital role in memory formation and neuroplasticity. Reduced expression has been observed in Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s disease and may be involved in stress response and mood disorders.
