Target Information
CD35 (CR1, Complement Receptor 1) is a cell membrane-bound monomeric glycoprotein that serves as the cellular receptor for C3b and C4b, key components of the complement system. It mediates binding to particles and immune complexes that have activated complement.
CD35 exists in four allotypes (C, A, B, D) with molecular weights of 160, 190, 220, and 250 kDa, respectively. It is involved in immune complex processing, promoting phagocytosis of C3b complexes, and inhibiting complement activation.
Expression is found on neutrophils, eosinophils, monocytes, B-cells, some NK-cells, erythrocytes, myeloid leukemias, and follicular dendritic reticulum cells. It is negative on basophils. Altered expression or mutations are associated with various diseases including gallbladder carcinoma, glomerulonephritis, lupus, and sarcoidosis. Mutations may also reduce Plasmodium falciparum rosetting, providing protection against severe malaria. Alternate allele-specific splice variants and a secreted form have been described.
