Target Information

Interleukin 8 (IL-8, CXCL8) is a 72 amino acid pro-inflammatory factor belonging to the CXC subfamily of chemokines. It binds to cell surface receptors IL-8RA and IL-8RB and functions as a chemoattractant and angiogenic factor.
IL-8 expression and secretion are induced by diverse inflammatory stimuli in many cells, including macrophages and endothelial cells. In endothelial cells, IL-8 is stored in Weibel-Palade bodies.
IL-8 was first isolated from osteosarcoma cells and contains the ELR motif (N-terminal Glu-Leu-Arg sequence), signaling through CXCR1 and CXCR2 receptors.
Previous nomenclature includes:

IL-8 and other CXC chemokine family members form a gene cluster mapped to chromosome 4q. Cancer studies indicate IL-8’s role in angiogenesis and tumor growth, and its involvement in bronchiolitis pathogenesis.
