Target Information
Bone Morphogenic Proteins (BMPs) are members of the TGF-beta superfamily that regulate bone and cartilage formation. Mature BMPs (30–38 kDa) have a TGF-beta-like cysteine knot structure. BMP2 expression can be upregulated by lovastatin, promoting bone formation. BMPs influence bone matrix protein production, stromal cell proliferation, and osteoclast activity. They also play roles in organ development, affecting cell proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, and morphogenesis. BMPs signal through type II and type I receptors, activating the Smad pathway.
