Target Information
The proteasome is a multicatalytic proteinase complex with a highly ordered ring-shaped 20S core structure composed of 4 rings of 28 non-identical subunits—2 rings of 7 alpha subunits and 2 rings of 7 beta subunits. Proteasomes are widely distributed in eukaryotic cells and cleave peptides in an ATP/ubiquitin-dependent, non-lysosomal pathway. The immunoproteasome plays a key role in processing class I MHC peptides.
This gene encodes a proteasome B-type family member, also known as the T1B family, which forms a 20S core beta subunit. Its expression is downregulated by gamma interferon, and proteolytic processing is required for maturation. This subunit is absent in the immunoproteasome and replaced by catalytic subunit 2i (proteasome beta 10 subunit).
