Target Information
Hexokinase (HK) enzymes catalyze the first step of glucose metabolism by phosphorylating glucose to produce glucose-6-phosphate, thereby committing glucose to the glycolytic pathway.
There are four major isoenzymes: HK1, HK2, HK3, and HK4.
Hexokinase 2 is the predominant isoform in insulin-responsive tissues such as skeletal muscle.
Its expression is insulin-regulated, and studies in rats suggest involvement in the elevated glycolysis rate observed in rapidly growing cancer cells.
