Target Information
The androgen receptor (AR) is a member of the steroid-hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. It is a ligand-activated transcription factor that binds active testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Upon ligand binding, AR dissociates from accessory proteins, translocates into the nucleus, dimerizes, and stimulates transcription of androgen-responsive genes.
AR plays a key role in:
- Development and function of male reproductive organs (prostate, epididymis)
- Regulation in nonreproductive organs (muscle, hair follicles, brain)
- MAP kinase pathway modulation and phosphorylation state changes
Abnormalities in AR signaling are associated with diseases such as:
- Prostate cancer
- Kennedy’s disease
- Male infertility
- Complete androgen insensitivity (CAIS)
