Target Information
Adipose tissue serves as an energy reserve and is tightly regulated. Adipocytes secrete various proteins such as lipoprotein lipase (LPL), leptin, Acrp30, resistin, and perilipin. Perilipin is an intracellular lipid droplet protein localized to the droplet surface and hormonally regulated. Upon lipolytic stimulation, perilipin is phosphorylated by protein kinase A and modulates hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) activity. Expression is restricted to adipocytes and steroidogenic cells. Two isoforms, Perilipin A and B, are known, both encoded by a single gene through alternative splicing.
