Target Information

Crystallins are separated into two classes: taxon-specific (enzyme) and ubiquitous. The ubiquitous class constitutes the major proteins of vertebrate eye lens, maintaining transparency and refractive index. The taxon-specific class includes proteins with NADPH-dependent quinone reductase activity. This gene encodes such a crystallin protein, distinct from other quinone reductases and lacking alcohol dehydrogenase activity. In humans, lens expression is low. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified, and one pseudogene is known.
