Target Information
The Slc22 family of organic anion and cation transporters (OATs, OCTs, OCTNs) are transmembrane proteins expressed predominantly in kidney and liver. They typically contain 12 predicted alpha-helical transmembrane domains and a large extracellular loop between TMDs 1 and 2. Members of the SLC22 family function as uniporters, anion exchangers, or Na(+)/l-carnitine cotransporters, and participate in absorption and excretion of drugs, xenobiotics, and endogenous compounds in various organs. They also play homeostatic roles in brain and heart. Mutations in this family can cause diseases such as primary systemic carnitine deficiency or idiopathic renal hypouricemia and may affect drug absorption or excretion. SLC22A17 is known as a receptor for Lipocalin 2 and shows relatively high expression in hematopoietic stem cells.
