Background
This gene encodes an angiogenic factor that promotes angiogenesis in vivo and stimulates the in vitro growth of various endothelial cells. It acts specifically on endothelial cells and mutations are associated with mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalomyopathy. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified. (RefSeq, Apr 2012)
