Background
Actins are highly conserved proteins involved in various types of cell motility. Polymerization of globular actin (G-actin) forms filamentous actin (F-actin) as a two-stranded helix. Each actin molecule can bind to four others. The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the actin family, comprising alpha, beta, and gamma isoforms. Alpha actins are found in muscle tissues and are key components of the contractile apparatus. Mutations in this gene have been linked to idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (IDC) and familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (FHC). [RefSeq, Jul 2008]
