Target Information

Action potentials in vertebrate neurons are followed by an afterhyperpolarization (AHP) that may persist for several seconds and influence neuronal firing patterns. Each AHP component is kinetically distinct and mediated by different calcium-activated potassium channels.
The KCNN2-encoded protein is activated before membrane hyperpolarization and contributes to the slow component of synaptic AHP, regulating neuronal excitability. It forms a voltage-independent calcium-activated channel with three calmodulin-binding subunits.
This gene belongs to the KCNN family of potassium channel genes, and two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
