Target Information
Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) is a multifactorial disease with both environmental and genetic causes. Genome-wide screening has identified several susceptibility loci for NIDDM within the human genome. A putative sugar transporter localized to chromosome 20q12–q13.1, one of these loci, resembles mammalian facilitative glucose transporters (GLUT) and is known as GLUT10 (gene symbol SLC2A10). Data suggests GLUT10 is a strong candidate gene involved in NIDDM.
