Target Information

CYP27A1 participates in the degradation of cholesterol to bile acids in both the classic and acidic pathways. It initiates the acidic pathway by introducing a hydroxyl group at the 27 position of cholesterol, producing 27-hydroxycholesterol. In the classic pathway, it produces 3β-hydroxy-5-cholestenoic acid. CYP27A1 also contributes to vitamin D3 metabolism. It is expressed in multiple tissues, though its specific roles are not fully characterized. In macrophages, 27-hydroxycholesterol may help reduce inflammatory factors linked to cardiovascular disease.
