Target Information

Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosylmethionine to catecholamines such as dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. This O-methylation is a major degradative pathway for catecholamine neurotransmitters. COMT also participates in the metabolism of catechol drugs used for hypertension, asthma, and Parkinson’s disease.
COMT exists in two forms: soluble (S-COMT) and membrane-bound (MB-COMT), differing in their N-termini. Multiple transcript variants arise from alternative translation initiation sites and promoters.
