Target Information
Nitric oxide (NO) is an inorganic, gaseous free radical that acts as a signaling molecule between cells. It is involved in vasorelaxation, neurotransmission, and cytotoxicity. NO production is mediated by nitric oxide synthase (NOS) enzymes, which catalyze the oxidation of L-arginine to produce L-citrulline and NO.
Three NOS isoforms have been cloned:
- Neuronal NOS (nNOS, type I)
- Endothelial NOS (eNOS, type III)
- Inducible NOS (iNOS, type II)
All NOS isoforms contain calmodulin, NADPH, FAD, and FMN binding domains.
