Human Enterokinase is expressed as a linear 1019 amino acid precursor glycoprotein. Proteolytic processing generates the biologically active heterodimer composed of a heavy chain (784 amino acids) and a light chain (235 amino acids) linked by a disulfide bond. The calculated molecular weight is 108.7 kDa.

Target Information
This gene encodes an enzyme that converts pancreatic proenzyme trypsinogen to trypsin, which activates other proenzymes including chymotrypsinogen and procarboxypeptidases. The precursor protein is cleaved into two chains forming a heterodimer linked by a disulfide bond. Mutations in this gene cause enterokinase deficiency, a malabsorption disorder characterized by diarrhea and failure to thrive.
