Target Information

ATF6 is a transcription factor that acts during endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress by activating unfolded protein response (UPR) target genes.
It binds DNA on the 5'-CCAC[GA]-3' half of the ER stress response element (ERSE) and ERSE II sequences. Binding to ERSE requires NF-Y interaction.
ATF6 may also participate in transcription activation via serum response factor. It forms homodimers and heterodimers with ATF6 beta and interacts with NF-Y trimer through NF-YC.
Under ER stress, the cleaved N-terminal cytoplasmic domain translocates into the nucleus to activate transcription.
ATF6 belongs to the bZIP family and is N-glycosylated, phosphorylated by MAPK14/P38MAPK, and processed by site-1 and site-2 proteases.
