MEK1 (MAP Kinase Kinase, also known as MKK) is a key component of the MAP kinase cascade regulating cell growth and differentiation. In the brain, this pathway also plays a crucial role in synaptic signaling. Activated MEK1 acts as a dual specificity kinase phosphorylating both threonine and tyrosine residues on MAP kinase.
