Target Information
Aconitase 1 (ACO1), also known as Iron Regulatory Element Binding Protein 1 (IREB1), is a cytosolic protein that binds to iron-responsive elements (IREs) and plays a central role in cellular iron homeostasis.
It also exhibits aconitase activity and is classified within the aconitase enzyme family.
IREs are stem-loop structures located in the 5′ UTR of ferritin mRNA and the 3′ UTR of transferrin receptor mRNA.
Binding of IREB1 to IREs regulates translation and stability of these mRNAs, maintaining iron balance in the cell.
