Target Information
Kinesins are a large family of microtubule-dependent motor proteins responsible for distributing organelles, vesicles, and macromolecular complexes throughout the cell.
Members of the heterotrimeric kinesin II family, including KIF3A, B, and C, mediate anterograde transport of membrane-bound organelles in neurons and melanosomes, as well as transport between the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus.
KIF3A plays a role in neurogenesis and left-right axis determination. Loss of KIF3A function in mouse photoreceptors causes apoptotic cell death, indicating its importance in kinesin II-mediated transport and proper cell fate determination.
