Target Information
MMP9 (matrix metallopeptidase 9, GELB, CLG4B) is a matrix metalloproteinase belonging to a family of zinc and calcium-dependent endopeptidases that degrade extracellular matrix proteins. It is secreted as a 92 kDa zymogen, and cleavage of pro-MMP9 results in an active enzyme (~82 kDa).
MMP9 features:
- Gelatin-binding domain with three fibronectin type II units
- Catalytic domain containing a zinc-binding site
- Proline-rich collagen-homologous domain
- Hemopexin-like domain
MMP9 is expressed by monocytes, macrophages, neutrophils, keratinocytes, fibroblasts, osteoclasts, and endothelial cells. It plays key roles in:
- Inflammatory responses
- Tissue remodeling and wound healing
- Tumor growth and metastasis
Elevated MMP9 levels are associated with idiopathic atrial fibrillation and aortic aneurysm. Studies also suggest involvement in IL-8-induced mobilization of hematopoietic progenitor cells and tumor-associated tissue remodeling.
