Target Information
ChM-1 is a cartilage-specific matrix glycoprotein that stimulates the growth of chondrocytes. It inhibits angiogenesis by disrupting endothelial tube formation, contributing to the avascular nature of cartilage. ChM-1 is highly expressed in the proliferating and hypertrophic zones of the epiphyseal plate in long bones and accumulates in the interterritorial matrix around lacunae. During development, downregulation of ChM-1 allows angiogenesis and bone formation. Its expression is reduced by growth factors such as TGFβ2, FGF2, and PTHLH. ChM-1 may also be involved in the hypovascularity and chondroid formation of pleomorphic adenomas. The human gene encoding ChM-1 maps to chromosome 13q14–q21.
